Preparing for a new baby can be a bit overwhelming. What do you need? Where do you start? They make those in how many different options?
But before you spend a dime, let me save you some research and some money. Here are some things you can either get for free or for a huge discount.
You’ll need to contact your health insurance to determine what options are available to you, as each one is different. Some will require that your doctor writes a prescription for the breast pump and that the order is fulfilled by an approved list of vendors. If you do plan on breastfeeding, I urge you to try and get your pump before giving birth. As you probably well know, working with an insurance company to complete any task may be a several week process.
When I had my son back in February, TRICARE did not cover the cost of a breast pump. I ended up choosing the Medela Pump In Style off of Amazon. This pump has been wonderful and I would highly recommend it if it happens to be one of your options. (Click on photo for link).
Even if you’re planning on breastfeeding, I would still sign up for the Similac Strong Mom’s program and the Enfamil Family Beginnings program. There are a lot of challenges that come with breastfeeding, and it’s nice to have an emergency cache of formula samples just in case. I was exclusively pumping for my son when he started catching up with all the extra milk I had pumped and frozen. Sleep deprived, running on fumes and toting a very unhappy baby, I realized in my current state I hadn’t noticed that the bottle I had just given my son was the last one and I wasn’t able to produce any more milk for several hours. And he was still hungry. Had I not had the formula samples, I would have had to tote a screaming baby all the way to the store to go pick up an emergency carton. Skip the stress for both of you, and sign up for at least one of these programs. I like to think it’s better if you are prepared and never have to use it, then needing it but not having it.
