Influenster Voxbox: TRESemme #TRESLoveYourLook Keratin Shampoo + Conditioner

TRESemme Keratin Shampoo + Conditioner

This month I received a free bottle of TRESemme’s Keratin Smooth shampoo + conditioner in an Influenster Voxbox for review.

I’m going to preface this with: my hair is fine, I have an oily scalp, and I go in once a month to the salon to bring my level 4ish dark brown hair to a level 10, so it needs extra TLC. I generally wash my hair 3x a week, shampooing twice and then leaving a conditioner (from my ears down to the tips) in while I shave. I’m currently using Redken’s All Soft Shampoo + Conditioner, so this was the perfect time to compare the two since they’re both made to have the same kind of resulting (smoothing properties + added shine).

When I first opened the box, I was surprised at how large these “sample” bottles were! These babies are 25 OZ – something you’d find at Costco or if buying in bulk. I quickly flipped the bottles over to check out the ingredients:

Ingredients

My heart sank a little as I noticed the second ingredient – sodium laureth sulfate. I try to stay away from anything made with SLS because with my hair, it’s a guarantee that I’ll have dry, crispy ends. Drugstore shampoos and conditioners are usually loaded with the stuff, as it’s an inexpensive way to get that bubbly lather (which makes people think it’s working well). BUT it’s also a known irritant – which doesn’t surprise me, as it’s made from sulfuric acid and sodium salt. Not something I’d really want to add to my hair.

But, for the sake of an honest review, I wanted to give this a chance. So I jumped in the shower and tried it out…

Immediately, I noticed how much foamy lather the shampoo gave me. When I added the conditioner to my ends, it was slightly difficult to run my fingers through to ensure even coverage and to detangle. When I was all rinsed, I jumped out of the shower and blotted my hair with a towel, added a small amount of smoothing product and took a wide-tooth comb to my hair before letting it air dry.

The result? Once my hair was dry, it felt heavy and weighted down. My ends were dry and crunchy, but my roots were heavy like I hadn’t washed my  hair in a few days. I typically wash my hair only three times a week, but I had to wash my hair every day while using this product in order for it to not feel like a greasy mess.

Shampoo + Conditioner

I really wanted to love this product (especially since they were so generous in sending such a large bottles) but I could not make this work. By the fourth day, I ditched these bottles and went back to my Redken All Soft combo. I usually like to give new products at least a full week – but I felt like if I waited any longer, my hair would have started breaking off.

If you’re looking for a smoothing shampoo + conditioner, I would recommend skipping TRESemme and paying a little more for Redken. Or at least something without SLS on the label.
